Software Updates

Today’s digital home devices are much more complex than TVs, DVD players, and gaming consoles of just three years ago.  In fact, there is at least 250% more software inside today’s Internet-connected digital TV. Furthermore, due to reduced software development budgets and shorter product development cycles, these digital home devices are more likely to experience software bugs than ever before. All of this has created a new environment in which consumer electronics manufacturers have to change their mentality from “ship it and forget it” to “ship it and support it”. Manufacturers need an advanced software management system to ensure products are adequately updated and supported. NetReady from UpdateLogic contains a robust, secure, and multipath software update service which delivers and automatically installs firmware upgrades to digital home devices via the Internet, over the air terrestrial broadcast, through cable transmissions, and by mail on USB (or similar) storage drives.

Secure "Software Updates" via NetReady
With the introduction of streaming media services on Internet-connected digital home devices, manufacturers and content providers are required to provide support for firmware updates. NetReady provides a secure and efficient software update service for manufacturers to fix security bugs and to update and support the product software as needed.

Turn-Key Managed Update Process
NetReady provides a completely turn-key service for managing software and firmware updates. UpdateLogic operates a global multi-path data distribution network, controlled by a highly secure Network Operations Center (NOC) that is managed by a skilled operations staff who employ a mature “managed update process” to ensure successful product updates. Manufacturers simply provide the new software revision to UpdateLogic and the well-experienced and focused engineering team plans and coordinates the distribution.

Manufacturers often choose to roll-out updates in phases to ensure that revisions work properly and to protect against sudden surges in support calls.  UpdateLogic can implement and monitor roll-outs in a phased process by product class, serial number groupings, geographic region, or other methods.  UpdateLogic also measures and reports on the status of updates including connections, attempts, aborts, completions and other metrics.  It is important for manufacturers to have a clear picture of the implementation status to ensure the install base is adequately protected.

Build vs. Buy
For the same reason that “cloud computing” has become a well accepted IT business practice, outsourcing software updates enables manufacturers to leverage highly secure state-of-the-art facilities, a multi-path global communications network, singularly focused operations staff, and proven mature processes that provide a complete turn-key solution.

Multi-Path Distribution
NetReady distributes updates through multiple delivery paths that provide the consumer electronics industry with the most complete software update service that can reach the entire install base.

  • Internet - UpdateLogic delivers software updates via the Internet on a worldwide basis through a highly secure and robust content delivery network.
  • Terrestrial – Through an exclusive relationship with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), UpdateLogic can broadcast software updates over-the-air (OTA), also known as over-the-air download (OAD), utilizing existing digital terrestrial broadcast bandwidth in the United States. Any device with an ATSC antenna - such as a television set, mobile handheld device, or a digital sign - is a good candidate for the use of the UpdateLogic technology.
  • Cable - Through its relationships with US-based cable operators such as Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, and Charter and through a contract with CableLabs, UpdateLogic can transmit the software update across cable networks directly to devices and automatically install without consumer intervention.
  • Mail – In the event other distribution processes cannot be utilized to update the device, UpdateLogic can also mail the software to the consumer on a media drive, such as a USB stick, for a simple self-install.
  • Factory - Last minute software updates often occur during the manufacturing process inside the factory. Factories typically have technicians manually perform these software updates by inserting a media drive (USB) into the TV or connect a PC to the TV via a serial port. This process can be very time consuming. NetReady technology is designed for use on the assembly line of the factory floor to provide a very efficient and expedient way for manufacturers to perform last minute software updates in the factory.
