UpdateTV is a suite of products and services that enable manufacturers of Digital Televisions (DTV), set-top boxes, and other digital equipment to distribute software updates to those devices using the same broadcast and cable networks that currently distribute video and audio content. UpdateTV can alternatively use the Internet to deliver updates.

To receive the updates, the DTV device uses a small software agent (called the UpdateTV Agent) that monitors terrestrial or cable broadcast streams for available software updates. At the appropriate time, specified by the UpdateTV Network, the device tunes to that same broadcast stream and performs a software download. Alternatively, the UpdateTV Agent can use an Internet connection (on television devices equipped with Internet access) to monitor for and retrieve software updates directly from UpdateLogic’s network operations center.

Regardless of the delivery method, the UpdateTV Agent then authenticates, decrypts, and re-assembles the software image before installing it as an upgrade to the current software. Unlike other software distribution models, no end-user involvement – or even notification – is required.

UpdateLogic has created infrastructure and security algorithms within the UpdateTV solution to ensure that televisions, set-top boxes, and other devices receive only the software images targeting that device. The device verifies the make, model, version, and other information provided by the network before the software is downloaded.

UpdateLogic aggregates software updates from manufacturers and schedules them for distribution. UpdateLogic also manages and continually monitors all network resources, distributed servers, and broadcast streams to ensure safe and secure delivery of all data.
